Day 9: The Child Jesus in the Temple

Lord God, Almighty King: in your hands all things are placed. If you wish to save your people, no one can resist your will. You made heaven and earth and all that is contained in them; you are the owner of all things. Who, then, can resist your majesty? Lord, God of our fathers: have mercy on your people, for the enemies of the soul seek to destroy us and the difficulties that confront us are very great. You have said: "Ask and it shall be given to you. He who asks receives. Whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will grant it to you. But ask with faith." Hear, then, our prayers. Forgive our faults. Turn away from us the punishments we deserve and make our weeping turn to joy, so that, by living, we may praise your holy name and continue praising it eternally in heaven. Amen.

⁴¹Every year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. ⁴²When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. ⁴³After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. ⁴⁴Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. ⁴⁵When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. ⁴⁶After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. ⁴⁷Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. ⁴⁸When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you."

⁴⁹"Why were you searching for me?" he asked. "Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?" ⁵⁰But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

⁵¹Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. ⁵²And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.

In this passage we encounter the young Jesus in the Temple, where He lingers among the teachers, listening and questioning with divine wisdom that astonishes all who hear Him. Mary and Joseph, after three days of anxious searching, find Him there and His words "Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" reveal His profound awareness of His mission and identity as the Son of God. This mystery invites us to ponder the hidden years of Christ's life, where even as a child, He models perfect obedience to the Father's will, while also teaching us about the pain of separation and the joy of reunion in faith. As we pray this novena, let us reflect on our own spiritual journeys: how often do we lose sight of Jesus amid the busyness of life, only to rediscover Him in the "temple" of prayer, Scripture, or the Eucharist? Like Mary, who treasured these things in her heart, may we grow in wisdom and grace, entrusting our worries to God and seeking to align our lives more closely with His divine plan. Through the intercession of the Holy Family, grant us the strength to remain faithful, even when the path seems unclear.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.
